"A Virgin Knelt in Prayer"  (Basque Carol)

For three-part treble voices and C-instrument, this less-familiar Advent/Christmas carol is a lilting, fun piece describing the annunciation. The mixed meter makes logical sense and follows the text well.

Short, fun, quick - 36 measures.

TEXT:

A virgin knelt in prayer before her God,

Creator of the world, eternal King:

When suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared,

descending out of heaven, entering to speak to her.

The angel greeted her in wondrous awe.

"Hail, Mary, who art full of grace," he said.

"The Lord is with thee now and will be ever more,

for thou art chosen from among all womankind."

And while she pondered what his words should mean,

the angel said to her, "Be not afraid,

thou, Mary, shalt conceive and bear to us a Son,

and they shall call him Jesus, Christ, the Lord, Emanuel!"

Key: a minor
